It may be the fourth week of September, but the weather at °®¶¹´«Ã½ still feels like summer. The shift from summer’s spontaneity to fall’s structure brings both nostalgia and excitement, as students settle back into the familiar pace of college life. However, with afternoon temperatures soaring into the 80s and students lounging outside still in shorts and summer clothing, the campus is buzzing with energy that feels more like July than the first day of fall. According to the Michigan has seen consistently warmer days this September, with record-breaking temperatures in the high 80s and 90s in early fall. For international students, first-year, or newly transferred students, this September heatwave adds an unexpected twist to their first impressions of Michigan fall.

For some students, the sunshine offers a welcome extension of the warmer days of summer and a chance to reflect on sunnier weather and its activities. “I like summer because I like the hot weather. It allows me to enjoy various outdoor activities with family, friends, and animals,” said Leslie Mateo (senior, animal science). This lingering warmth brings both comfort and nostalgia, encouraging students to savor the final days of sunshine before the cooler months begin to settle in.

Still, not everyone is clinging to the heat. Seasonal preferences often reflect more than temperature; they connect to mood, productivity, and lifestyle. Some students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the crisp air and changing leaves for a more authentic autumn experience. “My favorite season is autumn because everything is just so warm and cozy. I’m a big homebody, so I love being able to turn on a familiar movie and bake treats. It feels like the time of year when Earth is taking her break and resetting,” responded Ayanda Dewa (senior, global studies and Spanish).

Other students are moving past the heat altogether, looking toward the colder months ahead. “I like winter because it's prettiest. I also really like colder weather,” said David Brown (senior, business administration and information systems). For many, seasons are tied to traditions and spending time with family over the winter holidays. “Winter is my favorite. Christmas time is just a great time, along with all the holidays that come with great food,” stated Duane Darrett (first year, master of divinity).

This rare extension of warmth has created a strange but welcome mix of summer nostalgia and fall anticipation for the colder days. As Michigan weather continues to surprise many, students across campus are making the most of the sunshine while looking forward to fall and winter. While it’s great to enjoy the sunshine regardless of the season, these weather patterns are also part of a broader climate shift we’re observing across the Midwest. Whether it’s the warmth of summer, the coziness of fall, or the cold of winter, each season brings a different kind of joy, and students find ways to celebrate each season in their own way.
