Les Brown once said, “Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life." As a three-time member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Brown knows how important it is to have goals to strive for. The same happens to be true for college students. According to a by the Educational Credit Management Corporation Group, 65% of Gen Z teenagers believe that tertiary education is essential for success. However, only 13% percent have an idea of what their futures will look like. I recently interviewed a few students on our °®¶¹´«Ã½ campus to see how they’d like their lives to turn out.

Kierra Wilson (freshman, psychology) fell in love with her future after taking an AP psychology class in high school. Her dream is to study medicine at Loma Linda University. “I have a lot of family in the healthcare field, and I have a passion for helping others,” she said. Kierra hopes to work with children and adolescents as an outpatient psychiatrist.

Junia Alce (freshman, business) had planned to become an industrial organization psychologist, but after further research, she realized this wasn’t the career she wanted. Junia enjoys working with people and likes to keep busy, which wound up leading her to the business field. Now, Junia is striving for a master's in human resources and dreams of becoming a CEO. She’d also like to be married or engaged and form a deeper relationship with the Lord. “I want to connect with God on a deeper level and make it to heaven,” she told me earnestly. Junia and Kierra’s dreams are similar to their professions. For Janelle, this is not the case.

Janelle Macaraig (freshman, chemical engineering) says, “I enjoy building things and finding solutions to problems.” Despite choosing a science-oriented field, Janelle’s heart lies in creative writing. “I love writing, and the thought of being able to write or direct a movie would be like a dream come true.” Hopefully, Janelle will make this dream a reality.

Being a student is not an easy task. The pressure of balancing homework, classes, and friendships is beyond stressful. Kierra’s biggest struggle is feeling overwhelmed, as well as time management. Junia’s struggle is finding motivation to do her work instead of procrastinating. Janelle has an issue with doomscrolling on TikTok. “It’s lowkey ruining my life,” she admitted sadly. Despite these roadblocks, each student has continued to study what they love. Junia uses prayer when she needs motivation, and thinks of the future life she’s envisioned. When Kierra is struggling, she reminds herself of how far she’s come and that she is capable of anything she puts her mind to. Janelle’s biggest motivation is staying on par with the rest of her class.

No matter what you study in college, you will have challenges while you strive toward your goals. But if you set a goal and are determined to reach it, there’s truly nothing you can’t do.
