A newspaper is not complete without its editorial/ideas/opinion section. This section is so special because it tells more than facts and events; it amplifies the individual and collective voice of the community. The Ideas writers, then, not only yap about their own tastes and dislikes, but also carry the voice of the community they represent. As the Ideas editor this year, I look forward to best representing the student body, but especially YOU, the reader.
By the way, my name is Aiko Ayala! I am a current senior music performance major with a minor in writing, and I have been writing for the Student Movement since 2022. My hot take, or strong opinion, might be that classical musicians are not working enough on breaking the stereotype that classical music is just boring music for old people or the elite (if you want me to talk about it, let me know!).
However, it is not only I who will write in this section. Let me present to you my current team:
The Activist:
Hi guys, my name is Reagan Westerman, I am a senior and will be graduating in the spring with psychology and Spanish majors and minors in criminology and religion. A hot take of mine would have to be that Chipotle should have a discount, because I’m a student. And I really like Chipotle.
The Rebellious:
Hi everyone, my name is Samantha Woolford-Hunt. I’m a senior majoring in graphic design, and I will be graduating this year! My hot take is that butterflies aren’t cute; they’re actually terrifying.
The Classical:
Hello! My name is Ayanda Dewa. I am a graduating senior double-majoring in global studies and Spanish from Minneapolis, Minnesota. My hot take is that pineapple does not belong on pizza (sorry, not sorry!)
The Fire Fighter:
Hello! My name is Timi Olatunde, I'm from Canada, and I am a junior, majoring in biochemistry. As an opinion writer, theoretically, I should have some very strong opinions or hot takes. I find, however, that I do not have any hot takes because I do not believe there are any hot takes that haven't already been used to scandalize others. Hot takes are often used to provoke people, and even though provocative takes can lead to productive conversation, I do not think there are any takes that haven't already been discussed multiple times over.
If you are interested in joining the Ideas team, you are more than welcome to apply!
